Over the past month we’ve been talking about feasts. The feasts in Jesus’ teachings in Luke 14-17 tell of hospitality, inclusion, celebration and joy. They are contrasted with the feasting of a self-congratulatory rich man who ignored and excluded the poor beggar at his gate. There is yet one more feast in these chapters. It is perhaps the oddest and most perplexing of all. The foods Jesus mentioned in connection to this feast are mulberries and mustard. That doesn’t sound like a banquet to me, but the people who attend the banquet, and the way they attend is just as surprising.
